Update

Vacation Polaroids are up in the “Random Pictures” section, over to the right. We have been busy updating the Zine A Day website - we are almost there! I have also been working on sewing myself a new wardrobe for school, which starts in 2 weeks. On Monday, I start working overnight at Oasis twice a week.

The last week or so has been pretty crazy, between getting ready for our trip on Thursday and fun stuff. On the Fourth of July, Brock took Jay and me to his home town of State Center, Iowa (it is not really the geographic center - go figure) and we went to his friend’s house. His family bought a BUNCH of fireworks, so we just sat in lawn chairs and watched them, and we lit some Roman candles, too, and it was a great time. Then several different people came into town (Marina Hardy, Big Nurse) and we were going to their show/hanging out with them/letting them crash in our place as the cases may be, so that was pretty mad. And we are leaving for Chicago in three days for our summer vacation. It’s going to be fun, I just hope it doesn’t leave us homeless and starving when we get back.
T-Minus 9 Days

Until our summer vacation. We are busy getting stuff ready, printing shirts, making zines. We bought some Polaroid film on E-Bay for making zines on the road. Apparently Polaroid has stopped making instant film, so we had to pay like $60 for 5 packs of film, which I guess isn’t that much more than it was initially.
Also, we’ve been printing a ton of shirts to take with us. My grandma gave me an awesome sewing machine (our old one kind of broke from sewing paper with it), so I also made a neat dress, and did some sewing on some shirts for Brock and Jay. I may post pictures of those soon. I have kind of been wanting to go around and take pictures of a bunch of stuff I made and post it, but … one of these days.

So, massive flooding in Iowa City has rendered me jobless … indefinately (those are photos of my work). Which is half good, because I REALLY didn’t want to work 40 hours a week all summer at the IMU, but it’s also kind of bad because we are going to be spending our savings very shortly on our summer vacation.
But, my uncle suggested that I file for unemployment, so I did. I am waiting to see if I am approved. Since I am only temporarily laid off due to natural disaster, I don’t even have to find another job! Sweet! I can just chill all summer and get paid.

At 12 o’clock, that is some teryaki-basted grilled tofu topped with furikake. At 11 o’clock, we have some grilled catfish marinated in olive oil, balsamic vinegar, a splash of pineapple juice, salt, pepper, and some dill and cilantro from our garden. In the center, mashed sweet potatoes, and some bread with sheepsmilk cheese on top. Yesterday’s grilled dinner.

The orange glows in the dark.
Last Day of School
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
In an hour, I have to go leave to take my philosophy final, my last educational obligation of this school year, hoorah! I’m mildly worried, though, about how I will do on this test. I’ve kind of shunned that class all semester long because it’s mainly a bunch of nobodies blathering on about the Bible or about some totally unrelated inane issue, and it’s kind of a drag to sit through.
I’m also in the process of trying to get a new job, like at the copy shop. A new job at which I could make more money than I do now, since we are going to be spending all of our savings on some traveling this summer.
Zine A Day has had 2 more showings since the last ZAD-related post, but those are up on the website.
Man, summer is just a huge burden, lifted. I’ll finally have time and energy to do everything I’ve ever wanted and more, and plus it’s nice outside so we can actually go places on our bikes and have it be enjoyable. Man, it sure is a breeze (literally) getting around nowadays.
Free time is the best. Free is the difference between an apple and a picture of an apple. I made this thing, I think I am going to relive that memory.
I have been thinking, if I had infinite money, I would build a funhouse, circus-style, and people could walk through, but it would be the most awesome funhouse in the world. They would think they were journeying through their own minds, because they will never have seen a real space that looked so ethereal.
